The Stony Brook University police investigated a “report of a suspicious package” at Stony Brook University Hospital on Tuesday night, according to a campus-wide email.
The department sent out multiple alerts advising people to avoid Levels 4 and 5 of the hospital and the hospital roadway.
The police responded to a report around 9 p.m. from the hospital emergency room of a “suspicious male wearing a tactical vest,” according to a follow up email sent after midnight.
Officers took the individual into custody, and confiscated “what appeared to be a BB gun,” according to the email. The individual was also carrying a backpack with a “suspicious object.”
Suffolk County’s Emergency Services examined the object in the backpack, and the area was evacuated. Nobody was injured.
A final email sent at 3 a.m. announced that the bag was “rendered safe” and that the hospital had resumed normal operations.
The individual in custody is not connected with Stony Brook University.
