After surrendering an early second-half goal, the Stony Brook men’s soccer team rallied together to net three goals in the final 11 minutes of play to beat Hartford, 3-1, at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday night.
Junior midfielder Thibault Duval scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute of play. After a feed from junior forward Akeem Morris, Duval ripped a shot from the top of the box into the lower-right corner of the goal to give the Seawolves a 2-1 lead over the Hawks.
Hartford took the lead in the 57th minute of the game on its first shot on goal all game. Senior midfielder Udi Cohen took a shot, after receiving a pass from senior midfielder Quenton Swift, that bounced off the crossbar and down past the redshirt junior goalkeeper Tom McMahon to give Hartford an early 1-0 lead.
However, the Seawolves were in complete control throughout the night. Creating shot after shot, they ended the night with 17 shots while the Hawks only took nine. Stony Brook also had six shots on target, while Hartford accounted for one shot on net, the only shot on goal that the team scored on. The Seawolves also had five corner kicks, while the Hawks had four.
Duval tied the match in the 79th minute of the game, 22 minutes after Hartford scored. After controlling the ball and moving it up the field, the Belgian turned with the ball and cracked a shot from the top of the box and into the right corner to tie the game at 1-1.
Duval struck the net to tie just six minutes later, before sophomore midfielder Serge Gamwanya put the game out of reach for the Hawks in the 86th minute. After receiving a pass from junior forward Vince Erdei, Gamwanya dribbled into the box briefly before taking a shot and putting the ball into the lower-left corner of the net. It shot past the Hawks freshman goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton to push the Seawolves’ lead to 3-1.
On a tear of late, Duval has scored four goals in the last two games and ranks first on the team in goals scored. Duval and Erdei have a combined total of 11 goals on the season for Stony Brook. The Seawolves have scored 16 total goals this season.
Stony Brook will come home for a few days of rest before its next game. The team will take on the UMass Lowell River Hawks on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
