Stony Brook University is shutting down all Summer 2020 study abroad programs.
In an email sent to students with applications for a summer study abroad program, the International Academics Programs (IAP) noted that the U.S. Department of State declared all international travel to be a “Global Level 4 Health Advisory – Do Not Travel.”
With direction from the State University of New York, Stony Brook has canceled summer programs and fall programs that depart before Aug. 1.
“We deeply regret having to cancel these diverse and enriching international academic programs,” the email read. “However the safety and well being of our students is always our top priority.”
Students will be able to move their summer application to different future programs. Reimbursements of the application and administrative fees are being offered.
The IAP emphasized its commitment to the study abroad program but said the safety of the students was its priority.
“With so many uncertainties about health and safety, travel logistics, costs, and timing of when we will return to normalcy, we felt it was necessary to give students time to change their plans and to mitigate student and institutional losses of nonrefundable expenses, time, and emotional investment,” the email read.
