The Statesman sports section gathers around the table to discuss what’s happening in Stony Brook sports this week. The group talks about both soccer teams and their status as tournament contenders or pretenders, the women’s volleyball team’s rough weekend in Maryland and the hockey team’s NCAA exhibition from Saturday.

Anthony DiCocco, Assistant Sports Editor

Anthony DiCocco is an Assistant Sports Editor at The Statesman. He is a sophomore majoring in journalism with aspirations of becoming a sports journalist. His love of sports derives from years of playing dek hockey and watching his favorite teams, the New York Islanders, New York Mets and New York Jets. He is the beat reporter for Stony Brook’s hockey and softball teams. He has also covered football, baseball, men’s lacrosse and men’s soccer. He was previously the Editor-in-Chief of his high school newspaper the Devil’s Tale at Plainedge High School. He is a local product from North Massapequa, N.Y.

Cameron Takmil, Assistant Sports Editor

Cameron Takmil is a junior Biology major (B.S.), minoring in Health, Medicine, and Society at Stony Brook University. Cameron joined The Statesman in 2022 as a writer before becoming an Assistant Sports Editor in 2024. When he’s not keeping up with Stony Brook sports, he is the President of the American Cancer Society at Stony Brook and does novel pharmaceutical research at Stony Brook Medicine. Additionally, in his free time, he is an avid cook, pianist, and reader.

Alex D’Amaro, Assistant Sports Editor

Alex D’Amaro is an Assistant Sports Editor at The Statesman. He is a senior majoring in journalism with a minor in political science. His love for sports journalism stems from his years of playing baseball and watching his favorite teams: The New York Yankees, New York Knicks and New York Rangers. He has covered Stony Brook football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. He is a local product from North Babylon, N.Y.

George Caratzas, Assistant Sports Editor

George Caratzas is an Assistant Sports Editor of The Statesman. He is a sophomore majoring in journalism and minoring in creative writing, hoping to become a sports broadcaster. He is the beat reporter for the Stony Brook baseball and women’s volleyball teams. In his time at The Statesman, he has also covered the softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and football teams while also contributing to the multimedia section. He was previously the sports editor of his high school’s newspaper, The Focus at John Jay High School.
