In a statement released last Friday, President Samuel L. Stanley, Jr. announced more bad news to the budget-cut-ailing Stony Brook University community.
According to the press release, the House of Representatives has passed a significantly reduced budget for Pell Grant scholarships for 2011-12.
The reduced budget will take the maximum Pell Grant scholarship from $5,550 to $4,705, creating a loss of $845 for the academic year.
Stony Brook University currently has 6,000 students receiving some amount of aid in the form of a Pell Grant and allocates $29 million in Pell Grant scholarships. The budget cuts passed by Congress may cut the amount of money allocated to Stony Brook by $4 million.
The legislation will be voted on in the United States Senate early in the coming week.
