Men’s Basketball senior forward Rayshaun McGrew and sophomore guard Deshaun Thrower were charged with third-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal mischief on suspicion of a theft on April 6, the University Police Department confirmed. Both charges are felonies.

“The Stony Brook University Police Department arrested two residential students in connection with a theft on the Stony Brook University campus on April 6, 2016,” Eric Olsen, the assistant chief of police, said in an email. “The suspects, identified as RayShaun McGrew and DeShaun Thrower, were charged with Grand Larceny 3rd Degree and Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree.”

McGrew and Thrower were released on recognizance, and their next court date is on May 2 at Suffolk County District Court in Central Islip, according to New York state court records.

The Statesman was unable to confirm the nature of the alleged theft with the office of the Suffolk County District Attorney before publication.

Brian Miller, assistant athletics director for communications, directed The Statesman to university spokeswoman Lauren Sheprow.

“Stony Brook University takes all allegations of student misconduct very seriously,” Sheprow said in an email. “All students are subject to the University’s Student Conduct Code and the University is taking appropriate action according to that code.”

The two players are coming off winning the program’s first America East title and trip to the NCAA Tournament last month. McGrew averaged 10.6 points and six rebounds per game this season, while Thrower put up 1.9 points a game.
