Trailing Albany by four early in the second quarter, Stony Brook Men’s Lacrosse strung together six consecutive goals to take an 8-6 lead over the Great Danes with 9:25 remaining in the third quarter at John Fallon Field. But head coach Jim Nagle’s team was unable to snap a six-game losing streak against its America East rivals, as No. 11 Albany steamrolled No. 13 Stony Brook in the final minutes of the game, winning 16-10 on Saturday afternoon.
The final tally of the 6-0 run, a rebound goal by senior attackman Brody Eastwood, could not secure the win for the Seawolves. The Great Danes outscored them 10-2 over the final 24 minutes of the game, as the home team dominated in the faceoff circle. Albany led Stony Brook 9-4 in draw controls, as extra possessions enabled the Great Danes to take and expand the lead.
Albany sophomore attackman Connor Fields had four goals and two assists to pace the attack. Redshirt junior attackman Seth Oakes added three goals, as the 16 goals the Great Danes put up tied for the most allowed by the Seawolves this season.
The two teams each had 26 shots on goal in the contest, but Albany senior goalkeeper Blaze Riorden, a Tewaaraton Award Watch List selectee, was dominant between the pipes to stifle the Stony Brook offense.
Riorden made 16 saves in the game as the Seawolves had a shooting percentage of only 25.6 percent, well below their season percentage of 34.1 percent.
Stony Brook senior attackman Matt Schultz had a hat trick to bring his seasonal goal total to 19. Senior midfielder Challen Rogers had three assists in the game.
Junior midfielder Jay Lindsay, the team’s faceoff specialist, scored the second goal of his career in the second quarter. Lindsay secured a team-best six ground balls in the game.
Stony Brook’s next game is on Saturday at UMBC, where the Seawolves will square off with the Retrievers at 12 p.m..
