Will Tye signed by NY Giants off practice squad

For the first time, a Stony Brook football alumnus will be on an active NFL roster for a game during the regular season. According to his agent DuWayne Upton, the New York Giants will sign former Seawolves tight end Will Tye off of the team’s practice squad for its game Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Stony Brook had three former players sign contracts with NFL teams prior to training camp this year, with only Tye being signed to a practice squad.

The Florida State Seminole-turned-Seawolf was one of 44 players invited by the Giants to a tryout in the spring. He was one of only three from that group to be signed to a contract.

For Stony Brook, Tye caught 79 passes totaling 1,015 yards, scoring nine touchdowns along the way. He was selected to the All-Colonial Athletic Association second-team following last season.

Saturday, Oct. 3, 4:12 p.m.: The Giants officially signed Tye to the active roster, according to an article posted on their website at 3:45 p.m.

Tye had been waived by the team on Sept. 1 before the Giants signed him back onto the practice squad on Sept. 7.

The Giants terminated the contract of defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis to make room for the former Seawolf. Tye will be one of two active tight ends on the team’s roster tomorrow.

UPDATE: This story was updated on Saturday, Oct. 3 to include official word made by the New York Giants about the situation.
