The Stony Brook women’s basketball team will look to finish off the regular season on a positive note, with a pair of away games on Feb. 26 and March 1 against Binghamton and Hartford, respectively.
In the first game against the Bearcats this season, the Seawolves owned the glass, out-rebounding their opponents 46-21 in a 67-54 win. Senior Sabre Proctor had a big day, leading the team in scoring with 14 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.
Kori Bayne-Walker had a solid game herself, putting up 13 points to go with eight assists.
The key to the victory laid in the paint. Stony Brook scored 38 of its 67 points within the paint, while Binghamton only scored 10 points in the paint. If the Seawolves can control the paint as much as they did in January, there should be no problem with having control of the whole game.
The first game against Hartford was a much tighter contest. Despite strong outings from Bayne-Walker and Kim Hanlon with 11 points apiece, the squad could not outlast the Hawks’ offense. Hartford’s Amber Bepko scored 18 points and had eight rebounds as Deanna Mayza put up 13 points and seven assists.
Like the first Binghamton game, points scored from the paint played a big role in this game. Hartford outscored Stony Brook 32-18 in the paint. If the Seawolves hope to have a better game this time around, they need to have success in the paint. Another focus will be rebounding. SBU barely edged the Hawks in this category, with 35 rebounds to Hartford’s 34. If the Seawolves can grab more rebounds they will be able to control the flow of the game.
With a win in either game, the Seawolves will secure the third seed in the America East Conference.
