Strong goaltending kept the Stony Brook women’s soccer team in it, but their luck ran out 10 minutes too soon.
The Seawolves traveled to Philadelphia to take on the University of Pennsylvania Quakers at Rhodes Field on Sunday, Sept. 11. The two teams slowly battled one another through the first 80 minutes, leaving the scoreboard dry with no goals. The game finally began to change towards the very end when the Quakers offense dominated, handing Stony Brook a 3-0 defeat.
As the clock ticked down inside of the final 10 minutes, Penn midfielder Sizzy Lawton scored her second goal of the season to break the scoreless tie. Just over two minutes later, midfielder Lauren Teuschl scored her first goal of the season to double Penn’s lead. With only four minutes left in the match, forward Isobel Glass scored her first goal of the season off of an assist from Teuschl to put the Quakers up 3-0.
Stony Brook’s offense was blanked once again, as they attempted only five shots throughout the entire match. Forwards Reilly Rich and Luciana Setteducate both attempted two shots each, and midfielder Linn Beck recorded the Seawolves’ only shot on goal. Against Penn, the Seawolves struggled to find openings more than ever, as their one shot on goal was a new season low.
The defense continued its slump, as Stony Brook surrendered 22 shots with 14 on goal. However, the Stony Brook defense did have a bright spot amidst its bad luck. Although goalkeeper Nicolette Pasquarella allowed all three goals, the Long Island-native made a career-high 11 saves on Sunday. It was the highest total of any Stony Brook goalkeeper in 2022 thus far. Eight of her saves came in the first half.
Not much is going right for Stony Brook during this losing streak. On defense, they are allowing an average of four goals and 21.75 shots per game during this stretch. Opponents have also posted a 55.3% shots on goal percentage. Offensively, the Seawolves are averaging only one goal per game on 4.75 shots per game. They have not attempted more than five shots in any of their four straight losses.
Stony Brook will return home to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 15 for its final non-conference game of the season. There, they will host the Manhattan Jaspers at 6 p.m. The Jaspers currently hold a 2-2 record after losing 1-0 to Sacred Heart last Thursday on the road.
