Stony Brook University has canceled all classes and events before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2 out of an abundance of caution for the current nor’easter.

A steam leak in the Administration Building caused an electrical interference that resulted in a blackout across main campus on Friday, Sept. 1, Assistant Chief of Police Eric Olsen said. The blackout started at 12:20 a.m. and lasting an hour.

Winter Storm Jonas moved into the New York area over the weekend as hundreds of students moved into their residence halls for the start of the Spring 2016 semester.

The last time I was alerted, via text message, about an emergency situation going on on campus was on Aug. 4—there was a power outage.

Emergency Management monitors multiple forecasts from news sources and meteorologists, but primarily works with other emergency managers from around the state.

The Physics and Math buildings were evacuated after a fire on the third floor of the Math building set off alarms at 3:45 p.m. Classes in both buildings have been cancelled for the rest of the day.

Within the first few weeks of this semester, snowstorms have brought students three days of cancelled classes and brought the university three days of snow removal efforts.
