On Saturday, Aug. 15, the New York Jets announced the signing of former Stony Brook Football tight end Connor Davis. Davis, listed at six feet, eight inches tall and 260 pounds, played for Stony Brook from 2013 to 2017, starting at numerous positions ranging from tight end to offensive tackle to defensive end.
Davis played a total of 41 games at Stony Brook over five seasons. After redshirting during 2012, he made his collegiate debut on Sept. 7, 2013 against Rhode Island, playing ten games in the season while spending time at tight end as well as at the defensive line.
In 2014, Davis played two games before suffering a season-ending injury, starting at defensive end against Bryant and recording two tackles against UConn. He started all ten games in 2015 at right tackle before playing primarily tight end in 2016. In 2017, Davis caught a career-high five receptions for 38 yards in 11 games.
Davis was invited to the New York Giants’ rookie minicamp in 2018 but was not offered a contract. He then played for the Birmingham Iron of the short-lived Alliance of American Football in 2019, recording three receptions for nine yards. In 2020, Davis played for the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL, who signed him from the league’s Team 9 reserve in February.
Davis becomes the fourth Stony Brook alumnus to reach a National Football League (NFL) training camp in 2020, joining Washington Football Team offensive tackle Timon Parris, Atlanta Falcons safety Chris Cooper and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Gavin Heslop as the other former Seawolves currently on NFL rosters.
“Pumped for Connor,” Stony Brook tight ends coach Steven Martino said on Twitter.
Martino worked with Davis as the tight ends coach in 2016 and 2017. Davis also received support from current players.
“Always great to see an old teammate sign an NFL deal,” redshirt-junior long snapper Eric DiCrescenzo tweeted.
The Jets released safety Anthony Cioffi as a corresponding roster move. Cioffi, who signed with the Jets on Feb. 13, signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2017 before playing the last two seasons in the Canadian Football League.
