Junior forward Alyssa Francese scored her 11th goal early and the Seawolves buoyed off last week’s 3-1 win versus Albany in a dominating performance 2-0 over Vermont on Sunday, Oct. 20 in Burlington, Vermont.
The Seawolves excelled on both sides of the ball throughout the game, taking 15 total shots and seven on goal, with 10 coming in the first half. Stony Brook took a flurry of shots on goal in the 20th minute, eventually culminating in Francese’s team-leading 11th goal of the year in the 23rd minute. Vermont only managed two shots on goal in the entire matchup, which was mostly due to the Seawolves’ offense having so much success on Vermont’s side of the field. The Seawolves’ defense made sure that Vermont could not score by stopping them from getting the ball on Stony Brook’s side of the field.
“This was a great win on the road,” head coach Tobias Bischof said in a press release. “We used 18 players this afternoon and it was a total team effort to earn it. I am also very happy with our defense that preserved a shutout.” Bischof saw four different players have shots on goal in the contest.
This game marks the fourth shutout in the last six games the Seawolves have played, with three coming against America East conference opponents. Stony Brook has outscored opponents 17-3 since the last time they were shutout 2-0 against the Boston University Terriers on Sept. 25.
Offensively, the Seawolves are on pace to be shut out for the fewest times since the 2012 season in which they went 12-7-1.
The Seawolves have the chance to clinch the America East regular season title if they score four goals in their next two matchups. If they do, it will be the second consecutive season that Stony Brook has clinched the America East regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the America East Tournament. In 2018, Stony Brook clinched and lost in the America East semifinals to the UMass Lowell River Hawks 2-0.
Stony Brook continues their conference schedule at home in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium against the third-place New Hampshire Wildcats next Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. The Seawolves are 10-8-2 all-time versus the Wildcats and dropped their last matchup with them 1-0 in 2018.
