The Stony Brook Track and Field teams set their eyes on the America East Championship last weekend at the University of New Hampshire. The women’s team broke several personal and school records, gathering 129 points to place third out of nine teams.
Albany won with 198 points and New Hampshire’s came in second with 140 points.
Sophomore Chinque Thompson sprinted to second place in the women’s 100 and 200-meter dash, breaking her previous records with times of 11.55 and 24.08 seconds. Junior Courtney Warden lowered her previous school record in the 100-meter hurdles of 13.57 seconds down to 13.52 on her way to winning the event.
Junior Kaylyn Gordon continued her success from the regular season, breaking her own school record in the triple jump with a leap of 12.77 meters. She also soared into second place with a 5.60 meter jump in the women’s long jump.
The women’s 4x 400-meter relay team broke their school record from last week by two seconds with a time of 3:48.
In a tight race, junior Annika Sisson won the women’s 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:29.12, beating second place Shannon Murdock from the host team by four-tenths of a second.
Senior Dana Husband jumped 1.70 meters and placed second in the high jump in a new season best, missing her school record by 0.03 meters. The sophomore duo of Melissa Riback and Holly Manning finished third and fourth in the 800-meter run with times of 2:11.02 and 2:11.63 respectively, gathering 11 points for the Seawolves.
Despite finishing sixth out of nine teams, the men’s team broke a few school records of their own.
Sophomore Wayne Williams won the 400-meter dash and broke the 23-year-old school record of 47.24 seconds with a time of 46.94. Freshman Khadim Ndoye leaped his way onto breaking the 9-year-old triple jump school record, jumping 14.23 meters.
The men’s 4x 400-meter relay team broke their school record from last week by three seconds. The quartet consisted of Williams, freshmen Randy Maldon, Raymond Gorzela and sophomore Kevon White.
In a tactical race, junior Michael Watts beat a field of 37 runners on his way to win the men’s 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:36.
Sophomore Darian Sorouri hurdled his way to third place in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing with a time of 9:20.81. His performance topped his previous best of 9:34 by 14 seconds. Freshman Cameron Avery placed fourth in the men’s 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:40, four seconds behind Watts. Junior Danny Connelly paced himself in the 10,000-meter run, finishing in fourth place with a time of 31:19.36.
The men’s 4×100-meter relay also placed third with a time of 41.78 seconds, missing their previous school record by two-tenths of a second.
The Seawolves that achieved qualifying marks for the ECAC/IC4A Championships will head to Princeton, New Jersey to continue their championship season next week.
