Stony Brook Football put on a masterful offensive performance, dominating the Richmond Spiders 42-14 on Saturday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
- Moment that mattered: After punching in a two-yard run for his first touchdown of the season, redshirt junior Stacey Bedell blasted through the line of scrimmage for a go-ahead 49-yard touchdown run. For the first time all season, Richmond was on the other side of a lead as Bedell put Stony Brook up 14-7.
- What the win means: After a blowout loss to FBS opponent Temple, Stony Brook needed a big win to regain confidence. A 42-14 win over the No. 2 team in the Football Championship Subdivision, the highest-ranking win in school history, does just that. The offense came out with a big performance, shaking off the rust it showed in the first two games while the defense continued its domination in the first conference game of the season.
- Standout Seawolf: Stacey Bedell was back to his usual “lights out” self today as the redshirt junior ran all over Richmond’s defense. In the first quarter, Bedell ran for 69 yards on five attempts after having gained 60 yards in the last two games combined. Bedell scored a career-high four touchdowns, his first four of the season, and was a dominating presence throughout the game.

- The Seawolves offense came to play as they scored their first touchdown in two weeks, following it up with many more. After junior wide receiver Sherman Alston Jr. gained 38 yards on the ground, Bedell was able to pick up an eight-yard gain and put himself in position for a two-yard run to punch it in. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Joe Carbone also picked up his first touchdown pass of the season, blasting a 47-yard pass to junior wide receiver Ray Bolden.
- Stony Brook’s defense threw everything it could at Richmond, blitzing for the majority of the game. The team had three tackles-for-losses and sophomore linebacker Noah McGinty had a sack. With the pocket collapsing quickly, the Seawolves were able to force three interceptions, including junior defensive back Travon Reid-Segure’s pick in the red zone at the end of the first half.
- Although the game started at noon, the stars were out for the Seawolves. Bedell broke tackles and ran through defenders for four touchdowns and 100 yards. Carbone made good decisions and came away with a touchdown and 155 yards on 11-for-15 passing, and Bolden had 85 yards on four catches, reeling in one touchdown.
- What’s next: Stony Brook will continue its homestand at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Sept. 26 as the team takes on Sacred Heart. The Pioneers are currently first in the Northeast Conference.
