Softball wins one, ties one in doubleheader at CCSU

In its final doubleheader before conference play, the Stony Brook softball team won the first of two games played at Central Connecticut State on Tuesday. The second contest of the day was called off in the seventh inning due to darkness.

Junior outfielder Sami Duffy led the way in the opening game of the doubleheader as the Seawolves won 5-4 over the Blue Devils.

Duffy was one of five different players that drove in a run for Stony Brook. Playing against her former team, she went 2-for-3, including her first career home run in the sixth inning. Duffy’s drive over the left-field fence gave the Seawolves a 5-2 lead late in the game.

However, in the bottom of the seventh inning Central Connecticut State threatened to give Stony Brook a run for its money. The Blue Devils scored two runs on a pair of doubles to trim the lead down to 5-4, but senior pitcher Jane Sallen kept her composure and struck out two batters in the seventh inning to close the game.

In the second game of the doubleheader, freshman catcher Irene Rivera was the star, helping the Seawolves tie with the Blue Devils, 3-3.

Rivera went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, including her first career home run and a sixth-inning single that gave the Seawolves a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore pitcher Maddy Neales, who had thrown a no-hitter through five innings, was touched up for three runs and five hits in the next two innings. The Blue Devils tied the game when sophomore right-fielder Brittany Camara singled up the middle in the seventh inning.

Senior pitcher Alex Petrolia relieved Neales, and hit one batter before the game was called for darkness, thus ending in a 3-3 tie.

Stony Brook will head down to Baltimore to open its America East season in a weekend series against UMBC. The teams will play games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in a Friday doubleheader. The teams will return to the diamond for the series’ final game on Saturday at 12 p.m.. All games will be played at UMBC Softball Stadium.
