It was not a typical game for No. 11 Stony Brook Women’s Lacrosse junior attacker Courtney Murphy.

In her 48th career game, Murphy broke the school’s program record for goals scored in a career as the Seawolves held off a late charge from the Blue Hens and won the match 8-7 on Saturday.

Murphy scored a total of five goals in the win for Stony Brook, but it was her fourth goal of the match that broke the record. With 20:11 left to play in the second half, Murphy’s score put her in first place for most goals scored in a career, breaking Demmianne Cook’s mark of 158 goals.

Stony Brook and Delaware each scored three goals in the first. But the Seawolves came out of the break hot, scoring five goals in the first 15 minutes of play — three of which came from Murphy — to give them an 8-3 advantage over the Blue Hens. However, Delaware did not give up, as the team went on a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to just one for Stony Brook.

That was all the Blue Hens could muster though, as Stony Brook held on for the victory.

The Seawolves are now 4-3, but they have been playing ranked teams along the way. In six of the seven games played this season, Stony Brook has held its opponents to seven or fewer goals in the match. The one exception came last weekend against No. 9 USC, which scored 14 goals.

Stony Brook will have a few days to rest before its next match. They will continue their five-game homestand against Jacksonville on Thursday at 7 p.m. The team will then have a big matchup on Saturday when it faces off against No. 11 Stanford at 3 p.m. America East play will cap off the homestand, as Stony Brook will face two conference opponents in Vermont and UMBC.
