Women’s Softball sweeps UMBC after delays

The Stony Brook Women’s Softball team was not hampered by a three-day delay as they brought out the broom against UMBC, taking two of two contests on the road. The former contest was a 3-2 win, the latter favoring the Seawolves 2-1. These wins improved the Seawolves to a 12-12 record, with a 4-1 standing in conference play.

In the initial contest, Stony Brook fell behind 2-1 before a sixth inning Olivia Mintun double eventually led to a score on Bria Green’s RBI single. Jessica Zeilman drilled a shot up the middle to bring Green home after Bria stole second and advanced to third because of a catcher’s error.

This would not be the last time Zeilman came up huge for the Seawolves on this day. The lead was Stony Brook’s for the rest of the afternoon, thanks to pitching by Allison Cukrov, who gave up just a single run from the second inning on and picked up her eighth win on the season. Cukrov would strike out a season-high 10 batters.

Stony Brook struck first in game two, getting on the boards 2-0 behind a Shayla Giosia double that scored pinch runner Lexie Shue and a home run swatted to the center by Zeilman, her second of the season. UMBC countered with a run of their own in that same inning, cutting Stony Brook’s lead to a single point, but were not able to complete the comeback.
Stony Brook takes on Fairfield in hostile territory tomorrow, April 3, at 2:30 p.m.
