Melissa Rigo has been named America East Player of the Week for the second time this season. She had a career-high 27 digs and 16 kills to give Stony Brook the 3-2 win over UMBC. With this win, the Seawolves remained tied for first with New Hampshire.
Rigo’s defense was one of the reasons Stony Brook came away with the win. She helped the Seawolves hold UMBC, who came into the match leading the league in hitting percentage. In the match, Stony Brook had 106 digs, which was the most in the America East this season.
Rigo recorded the final four points of the match for Stony Brook on three kills. She is second on the team with 11 double-doubles this season. Five of those are in league play and she has double-doubles in kills or digs in seven of Stony Brook’s eight matches in conference play.
Rigo and the Seawolves return home on Friday against Albany, where they look to remain perfect in home games. They will then take on reigning champion Binghamton on Sunday.
