Columbia served the Stony Brook women’s soccer team its third straight loss, dropping the Seawolves below .500 for the first time this season.
The Seawolves (3-4) traveled to New York City to play against the Columbia Lions on Thursday, Sept. 8 at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. The team was handed a 4-1 defeat after being held scoreless in the first half and struggling defensively.
Columbia owned the first half, scoring three goals in a 10-minute span. Columbia midfielder Grace Hurren drew first blood in the 29th minute with a goal off of an assist from defender Ania Prussak. Over five minutes later, forward Ally Clark scored another goal for the Lions, giving them a 2-0 lead. Four minutes later, midfielder Stephanie Jung scored her first goal of the season off of an assist from midfielder Kat Jordan to finish the 10-minute spree.
Things did not improve for Stony Brook in the second half. After the Seawolves broke the shutout with a goal off a penalty pick from forward Reilly Rich, Columbia answered just 25 seconds later with a goal from forward Maia Tabion to leave the Seawolves in the dust.
On a positive note for Stony Brook, Rich’s goal was her fourth of the season. Rich continues to become a rising star, as she leads the team in almost every offensive category.
However, Stony Brook’s offense hit a new low, as it was held to just four shots in total. Columbia outshot the Seawolves, attempting 10 shots with five on goal.
The goaltending was poor for Stony Brook as well, as goalkeepers Ava King and Nicolette Pasquarella combined to save only one of the five shots on goal from Columbia.
The Seawolves defense continued its slump, as it allowed at least four goals for the third straight game. They have allowed 13 goals and a 52.4% shots on goal percentage during this three-game losing streak. Opponents are averaging 21 shots per game against Stony Brook over that interval.
The Seawolves will stay on the road for their next game, as they will travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to take on the University of Pennsylvania Quakers on Sunday, Sept. 11. The game will kickoff at 4 p.m. The Quakers are still unbeaten, currently sitting at 1-0-4 after a 1-1 tie against Navy on Thursday. The Seawolves will look to snap their losing streak and get back on track with conference play just two weeks away.
