In the second game of the season for the Stony Brook women’s soccer team, the Seawolves played on the road again against the UMass Minutewomen on Wednesday, March 3 in Amherst, Mass. Stony Brook played a great game, but the Seawolves’ lack of goals ended in defeat, losing 2-0.

At the start of the first half, the Seawolves came out hot, with shots coming in left and right, putting pressure on UMass’ backline. But that was not enough to put the Seawolves on the board.

UMass retaliated, converting their first shot on goal in the 13th minute with freshman midfielder Ella Curry’s help. 

The Seawolves came close to leveling the game in the 15th minute with a rocket of a shot from junior midfielder Mari Brenden, hitting the left post.

The Seawolves fought hard to level the scoreboard, having 11 shots in the first half. While UMass only had one shot, they made the most of their opportunity and were up 1-0 at the end of the first half.

In the second half of the game, the tables turned in terms of time of possession. UMass had possession for a majority of the time, putting constant pressure on the Seawolves’ backline.

In the 52nd minute, senior midfielder Fatou Barry was able to squeeze the ball past Seawolves sophomore goalkeeper Emerson Richmond Burke, making the score 2-0. 

The Seawolves only had three shots during the second half. The constant pressure against the Seawolves made it difficult for them to retaliate.

Graduate forward Alyssa Francese led the team with four shots, including two shots on goal, but could not convert any of those opportunities.

The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, March 7 against the UMBC Retrievers at 12 p.m. Aside from being the America East conference opener, it will also mark the first time this season that Stony Brook will play home at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
