Stony Brook University reports the first case of COVID-19 on campus during the fall semester

Stony Brook University confirmed the first COVID-19 case on campus this week. SBU sent out an informative email to all students and staff on Aug. 28.  RABIA GURSOY /THE STATESMAN

Stony Brook University confirmed the first residential student case of COVID-19 during the fall semester in a campus wide email sent on Aug. 28.

The infected student is asymptomatic and has been exclusively taking online classes, according to the email. Student Health Services is working in tandem with the local Department of Health to trace and notify anybody who has come into close contact with the individual.

The email also reminded the campus of the COVID-19 dashboard, a website created by the university to inform the Stony Brook Community of any cases as well as testing data. The dashboard will be updated weekly, and the email states that the university will not be notifying the campus of each individual positive case.

Precautions put into place to stop the spread of COVID-19 on campus include a COVID-19 daily health screening for faculty and staff, which is used within one hour of their arrival on campus. Students that live or commute on campus to attend in-person classes, or use any campus facilities are expected to complete a daily temperature and symptom check through the Campus Clear app.
