The Stony Brook women’s soccer team carried on their three-game winning streak with a 2-0 defeat of conference rival Binghamton on Sunday, Oct. 6, propelling them to the top of the America East standings with an undefeated 3-0 conference record and a 9-4 overall record. Binghamton leaves the game with a 2-1-1 conference record and 8-3-2 overall, dropping them to fourth place.
Stony Brook opened with a goal on a shot to the far post by junior forward Fanny Götesson off an assist by Chelsie DePonte at 9:51 into the game. With possession moving back and forth throughout the end of the first half and the start of the second, Stony Brook attempted four shots on goal, all of which were saved by Binghamton sophomore goalkeeper Haylee Poltorak.
Binghamton’s sole shot on goal came at the 35th minute by junior defender Erin Theiller, but was saved by Stony Brook junior goalkeeper Sofia Manner, who has amounted 53 saves so far this season. The Seawolves solidified their lead in the game’s 70th minute with a goal by junior forward Alyssa Francese, the team’s scoring leader. It was her ninth of the season and came off an assist by Götesson.
Francese’s performance contributed to her being named America East Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7, her second honor this season. Francese’s nine goals lead the conference and her 27 career goals are fifth all-time in Stony Brook history.
“Away games are never easy, especially against a very confident team like Binghamton that was 8-2-2 coming into today,” head coach Tobias Bischof said in a press release. “I thought we performed well and it was a total team effort from every player.”
The Seawolves’ 2-0 victory marks the team’s third defensive shutout in a row and their fifth of the season. After a week off, Stony Brook is set to delve deeper into conference play with a meeting against UMass Lowell on Sunday, Oct. 13, at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The River Hawks are entering the game tied for fifth in the America East with a 2-7-1 overall record and a 2-1 conference record.
