With a game-winning performance on Saturday, April 20, Stony Brook Men’s Lacrosse freshman midfielder Layton Harrell secured his second America East Rookie of the Week award of the season, announced by the America East Conference on Monday morning.
Harrell’s clutch performance against the then-conference leader Vermont came in the fourth quarter of the game when the Seawolves needed a boost. His first goal came when junior attacker Jack Hannigan found him on a man-up opportunity, then with seven minutes remaining Harrell scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Mike McCannell.
The highlight of his performance, however, came with 3:24 left in the game. Junior attacker Tom Haun again found Harrell for a shot, which Harrell scored to put the Seawolves up 10-9 against the Catamounts. The Seawolves would not relinquish that lead, and now stand as the top team in the America East with one game remaining before the playoffs begin.
His second conference honor of the season and of his career, Harrell joins Haun as the only players with two conference honors this season. Junior midfielder Chris Pickel Jr. and junior goalie Michael Bollinger round out the team winners with one apiece.
Stony Brook’s final regular season game will be on Friday, April 26 at 7 .m. at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium against conference rival and second-ranked Albany.
