College Basketball Preview: Stony Brook University at #23 Notre Dame

After over a week of rest, Stony Brook’s men’s basketball team will be back on the road Sunday to face #23 Notre Dame. This will be the Seawolves’ first game against a ranked opponent since 2008 and their second opponent from the Big East Conference this season.

Stony Brook (4-5) is coming off a tough 75-66 loss to Sacred Heart at home last week. Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.) led the Seawolves with 18 points on six three-pointers. Stony Brook shot 44.9 percent from the floor, but the Seawolves committed 18 turnovers and struggled from the free throw line once again, making only 15 of 23 shots. They are shooting just 69 percent from the line this season.

The Fighting Irish are off to a 9-1 start, averaging 79.5 points and defeating opponents by an average scoring margin of 14.8 points. Senior guard Ben Hansbrough leads the team with 16.0 points per game and ranks fourth in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 54.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Notre Dame is coming off an 83-79 win over Gonzaga (4-5), with four players scoring in double-digits. Senior forward Carleton Scott led the way with a career-high 23 points. Tim Abromaitis added 21 points.

The Fighting Irish will have a significant size advantage over the Seawolves, with eight players listed as 6’ 8” or taller. They are averaging 41.1 rebounds per game while Stony Brook is averaging 38.3. The Seawolves will have to put forth a strong effort on the glass if they hope to win this game.

This will be the second meeting between the two teams, the first coming in 2006. Notre Dame hit 15 three-pointers and shot 50 percent from the field on their way to a 95-66 victory.

Sunday’s game will be televised on ESPNU, Stony Brook’s second of three games this season to be televised on the ESPN family of networks. The game will also be available to stream online on ESPN3.com. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
