The Stony Brook men’s cross country team’s fourth place finish in the 10K race at the 2017 NCAA Northeast Regionals on Friday is the top performance at the event in program history. The women’s team placed 18th in the 6K run.

The men’s team was in the running for a top-five spot the entire race. Their lowest position came at the one-mile marker of the 10K, where they were seventh. The Seawolves grabbed fourth place by the three-mile marker and never relinquished the spot. The men’s program’s previous top finish in the NCAA Regionals was seventh place in 2007.

The fourth place finish for the men’s team comes off their second consecutive victory in the America East Championship back in October, where they finished three points ahead of second place UMass Lowell.

Sophomore Vann Moffett led the way for Stony Brook, finishing in 23rd place with a 32:37.01 finishing time. Moffett started out in 48th place at the end of the first mile but climbed the list at every checkpoint.

Sophomore Cameron Avery also had a strong performance, initially taking the lead for Stony Brook at 32nd place. Avery would climb as high as the 11th spot three miles in but ultimately placed 34th with a time of 32:56.06.

Junior Annika Sisson led the pack for the women’s team, finishing in 22:27.01 at 23rd place in the 6K race. Sisson climbed out of an even deeper hole than Moffett, starting off at 52nd by the end of the first mile. Senior Tiana Guevara also finished the race in 60th place out of 251 runners with a 22:59.09 time. 

After the race, it was announced that both Sisson and Moffett earned All-Region honors for their individual performances.

The Seawolves will now look ahead to Nov. 18, when they will compete at the IC4A/ECAC Championships in the Bronx to finish out their season.
