Sophomore Cameron Avery and senior Tiana Guevara were named male and female America East Cross Country Performers of the Week after their performances at the Wolfie Invitational this past Saturday, Sept. 9.
Avery opened his season by taking first place in the men’s 8,000 meters with a time of 24:23, besting his time of 26:11.18 from last year by nearly two-minutes. He did not run at the Stony Brook Season Opener and joined a full strength squad at the invitational. Four more Seawolves followed Avery rounding up the top five.
On the women’s side, Guevara went on to place second at the Wolfie Invitational in the women’s 5,000 meters with a time of 17:50.2 behind Seton Hall’s Christiana Rutkowski. She broke the 18-minute barrier on her way to beating her old personal record of 18:32.7 from her freshman year.
Guevara opened her season a week prior at the Season Opener with a strong showing, running 13:56.8 over 4,000 meters, placing second behind Sacred Heart’s Kate Svensen. The women’s team finished second out of four teams with a total of 33 points to Seton Hall’s 27.
The men’s team came in first out of five teams gathering a score of 15 points, the lowest possible score in a cross country meet. They also had seven runners in the top 10, showing a strong performance.
Sophomore Vann Moffett was named America East Performer of the Week a week before teammate Avery, after winning the Season Opener with a time of 18:24.07 over 6,000 meters.
The Seawolves will head to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to continue their season at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday, Sept. 29.
