Despite taking a 1-0 lead over the hosts, the Stony Brook men’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Retrievers on Wednesday evening in Baltimore.
UMBC was hoping to avenge its 2009 finals loss to Stony Brook. The Seawolves defeated the Retrievers, 2-0, at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in last year’s playoff meeting. This year would be different.
Sophomore Raphael Abreu (New York, N.Y.) hit first for the Seawolves, scoring in the 8th minute.
But three quick goals from UMBC before halftime put the Retrievers ahead for good. Pro prospect Levi Houapeu scored twice, and then just 1:23 after his second Liam Paddock scored the eventual game-winner on a cross from Andrew Bulls.
The UMBC goalkeeper scored an own goal in the second half after punching in a shot that he originally saved from Berian Gobeil Cruz (Montreal, Quebec), but the game was out of reach for the Seawolves, who couldn’t convert for the remainder of the game.
Stony Brook ended its season at 10-7-3, its fifth 10-win season.
