Swimming and diving splits at Maine

The Stony Brook swimming and diving teams split the meet against Maine this Saturday.  The women won 184-116, while the men lost 160-134.

Freshman Renee Deschenes (Winnipeg, Manitoba) led the women’s team, placing first in the 1000 freestyle (10:46.92), the  200 butterfly (2:11.31), and the 200 backstroke (2:08.48).

Freshman Allison Zelnick (Troy, O.H.), junior Darcy Heuser (Centerville, O.H.), and junior Taylor Crosby (Port Monmouth, N.J.) each also won two events. Zelnicke won the 200 free in 1:56.72 and the 500 free in 5:14.88, Heuser placed first in the 50 free (25.08) and the 100 free (54.31), and Crosby swam to wins in the 200 IM (2:14.63) and the 200 breaststroke (2:26.08).

The women’s relay teams won the 200 medley and the 400 free. Sophomore Christie Bodden (Panama City, Panama), freshman Veronica Reid (Duncan, British Columbia), junior Stephanie Gross (Fairport, N.Y.), and Zelnick won the medley in 1:50.61. Junior Kelsey Stranc (Chicago, I.L.), Deschenes, Zelnick, and Heuser swam to first in the free.

Junior Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) led the men with wins in the 50 free (21.80) and 100 free (48.02). Junior Mark Anderson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.13. Senior Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y.) won the 200 butterfly in 2:00.10. Junior Daniel Kim (Douglaston, N.Y.) won the 200 backstroke in 2:01.63.

The men’s team was victorious in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. Sophomore Daniel Wenzel (Norwich, N.Y.), junior Cliff Gonzalez (White Plains, N.Y.), freshman Derek Woodhead (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Conway took the 200 medley in 1:40.27. Senior Chris Olwell (Floral Park, N.Y.), Junior Ed McIntyre (Laurel, N.Y.), Conway, and Woodhead won the 400 free in 3:14.85.

The teams race again against Boston University at 4:00 at the University pool on November 12.
