Eleven was the number of the day for Stony Brook Softball on Wednesday. After not playing for 11 days due to game cancellations and postponements, the team traveled to Hartford, Connecticut and dropped both games of a doubleheader, bringing its losing streak to 11.
Stony Brook faced Sacred Heart University, losing the first game 2-0 and the second 3-1. The first game was won for Sacred Heart by senior third baseman Victoria D’Addario’s walk-off, two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh.
Game One: Sacred Heart 2, Stony Brook 0
The first game ended in dramatic fashion thanks to D’Addario’s late-inning heroics, but the bats were quiet on both sides until then. The teams had one hit apiece going into the seventh.
Stony Brook batters struck out 12 times and got on base four times. Three of those on base opportunities were the work of freshman pitcher Melissa Rahrich. She walked twice and got the Seawolves’ only hit of the game – a single to right field in the fourth inning.
Sophomore catcher Irene Rivera and sophomore right fielder Katelyn Corr both struck out three times. The only baserunner besides Rahrich was freshman third-baseman Riley Craig, who walked once. Senior Alex Petrolia started and threw four scoreless innings, allowing only three baserunners.
D’Addario’s one-out, walk-off home run came facing Rahrich, who allowed two hits and two runs over 2.1 innings in relief. The runner on-base was sophomore Addison Landry, who pinch ran for junior Fallon Bevino after the first baseman singled to center to set up the grand finale.
Senior right-hand pitcher Jamie Carlson threw a complete-game shutout for Sacred Heart, picking up her fifth win of the season.
Game Two: Sacred Heart 3, Stony Brook 1
The second game saw slightly better offensive results for both teams, although ended in the same way – with a Stony Brook loss. A three-run rally in the third inning by Sacred Heart batters put them ahead for good. Sophomore right-hand pitcher Kristen McCann, of Sacred Heart, pitched a complete game, picking up her second win of the season.
Seawolves junior Maddy Neales started and threw three innings, allowing three runs, three hits, and three walks. She also struck out three. Sophomore Lindsey Hughes came in and threw three innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits, no walks, and struck out five.
Stony Brook senior centerfielder Sami Duffy reached on a single and scored an unearned run in the sixth after a Sacred Heart error. In total, Stony Brook managed five hits, one walk, and struck out nine times.
The Seawolves, who have been outscored by 52 runs so far this season, come home for a pair of doubleheaders against Brown and Holy Cross this weekend and another home game against Monmouth on Monday.
