On an early Friday morning, the Stony Brook men’s soccer team looked to build on its win at Seton Hall and take down Buffalo at the University of Buffalo Stadium.

But when the final horn sounded, the Seawolves walked off the field in defeat, as they lost to the Bulls 3-0.

The game seemed to be going into halftime as a stalemate, up until the Bulls broke through at the 39th-minute mark. Freshman forward Rikard Lindqvist was able to beat the Seawolves defense on a run down the wing. He received a ball from senior midfielder Russell Cicerone, cut the ball back and curled it into the far-bottom corner to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The frustration started to show for Stony Brook as the second half started. After netting three goals in its first two games of the season, the Seawolves were unable to find the back of the net. When controlling play, nothing seemed to work. Their crosses, long throws, corner kicks and free kicks could not get past Buffalo’s defense and into the back of the net.

The frustration all came to an implosion after a bad tackle in the box by Stony Brook led to a penalty shot for Buffalo, where Cicerone capitalized and scored his sixth goal of the season.

The damage was not done yet. As time was dwindling down in the second half, Cicerone added insult to injury with a ball into the box that was put into the left corner by senior midfielder Braden Scales to push the Bulls’ lead over the Seawolves to 3-0. Minutes later, the final whistle blew and the game was over.

The Seawolves came into the game knowing they were going up against a very tough Bulls team. The Bulls already had a historic season before today. The team won its first game against Daemen by a program-record 9-0 margin, followed by a dominant 1-0 victory against its crosstown rivals Canisius. Additionally, the team was able to get its highest Great Lakes Region ranking in program history at No. 5.

Stony Brook will have a break until Sunday, when the team takes on Canisius at 1 p.m.
