Stony Brook Women’s Soccer trailed Yale just 1-0 entering the 74th minute, at which point, the Seawolves defense began to crumble. The Bulldogs scored three goals in the final 17 minutes of the game to defeat the Seawolves 4-0 at Reese Stadium on Wednesday. Stony Brook falls to 0-3-1 on the year.
The defense was doing a great job of containing Yale’s attack, only allowing them to score once in its first 13 attempts. But sophomore midfielder Sofia Griff scored two goals in the 83rd and 89th minutes to lead her team to victory. Griff leads Yale with three goals on the season.
Freshman forward Aerial Chavarin goal was scored off of a header from on a corner kick initially put Yale on the board in the 40th minute.
Yale’s offense had begun to operate again midway through the second half. After six shots in the previous seven minutes, junior midfielder and forward Sarah McCauley scored from 15 feet out, opening up the floodgates.
Stony Brook nearly took the lead in the 32nd minute when senior forward Raven Edwards received a cross pass in the penalty box from freshman forward Lea Kalmbach. However, her shot hit off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Yale used a different goalie in each period: sophomore Maritza Grillo in the first period and freshman Alyssa Fagel in the second period. Yale’s backline held Stony Brook to just three shots in the second period as Yale’s offense ran away with the game.
Through four games the Seawolves have scored only once while its opponents have scored a combined nine goals. Edwards has the team’s only goal on the season to date.
With the win over the Seawolves, the Bulldogs are now undefeated at 3-0-0. The team ranked last in the Ivy League Conference last season.
Stony Brook will look to collect its first win of the season on Friday when it visits Fairfield University, for a rematch of last season’s 2-2 tie in which Edwards scored two goals.
