    —————————————————————————————————————-

Okay that’s really all…stay tuned for some more amazing coverage. Goodnight everybody.

Team, in a new tradition, returns to listen to the band perform the alma mater…very nice. Notre Dame-esque.

Coach Priore has stopped the players out on the field…I’ll ask about what was being said.

    Final: Stony Brook 31-14 American

I’m going to head down to the press conference now…goodnight everybody and thank you for reading. Stony Brook’s next game is away at Brown next Saturday. An overall good performance from the Seawolves…stay tuned to sbstatesman.com for all the latest on the game, including video! We’re going multimedia this year. I’m @samkilb, goodnight and drive safely.

00:00 Williams runs one final play and Stony Brook wins, 31-14. Stony Brook’s first win of the season comes in its home opener.

:35 Williams is tripped up at the line…the clock could run out but they will run another play.

AIC takes over at its own 37.

:46 Mobley is stopped and Stony Brook turns the ball over on downs.

1:24 Mobley stuffed on third, and Stony Brook will go for it from the AIC 37. Fourth and 4.

1:55 Major Mobley goes for three yards.  Mobley gets another three or four on second down. Thid and four.

3:41 Stony Brook starts from its own 38. Maysonet (still in the game) gets another 20 or so to his name, taking it down to the AIC 43.

Attendance announced at 4,291. Probably accurate. A good size crowd for a holiday weekend and meaningless game against an inferior opponent.

3:47 By request, Jackolski gained 167 and Maysonet got 139. Very impressive from both. A true two-headed backfield monster.

3:47 Andre Samuels is now on his feet and walking off. AIC hits the extra point. 31-14, Seawolves.

3:47 Touchdown, AIC. A long 36 yard TD pass from Parent to Samuels, who is shaken up on the field. He made a nice diving catch in the end zone for the score.

3:55 Incomplete on second and it’s third and about 11 from the SBU 35.

AIC really moving the ball against Stony Brook’s second team defense. The Seawolves didn’t do this to USF’s second team.

5:00 Second down was a quick hit for another first.

5:57 Another first down for AIC, and on first down they run it down to the SBU 41.

6:03 Then he completely missed his receiver throwing deep. Second and 10.

6:32 Parent got blindsided in the backfield but completed the pass for the first down at the AIC 41.

7:14 Mayo gets another couple, and it’s third and 5.

7:55 AIC will start from its own 23. Mayo picks up a yard on first.

8:40 Polo can’t pick up the first, and Stony Brook will punt it away.

9:25 Essington with a good pitch and catch with Myles Campbell…Coach Priore emptying the bench now. Third and 3 at the 41.

10:03 Essington drops the snap, but falls on it at the line. Second down.

10:39 Essington hands off to Vincent Polo, who picked up a first down. First and 10 from the 31.

10:54 In football land, Stony Brook just threw an incomplete pass on second down after a three-yard run on first. Third and 7 from their own 23. Kyle Essington has replaced Coulter at quarterback.

Coach Pikiell has high hopes for his group in men’s basketball this fall…he sounded very optimistic. He likes his freshman class, and thinks several of them can step in this year. Should be a good basketball season. I can’t wait.

11:32 Stony Brook forces an AIC punt, which makes it to the end zone on one bounce. First and 10 Stony Brook from the 20.

13:19 Stony Brook head coach Steve Pikiell has stopped by in the press box, so excuse my lack of attention. Mayo just took a couple dozen yards and AIC is on the Stony Brook 42.

Maysonet with a 48-yard run down the sideline for the touchdown…he burneddddd the last DB to get to the end zone. 31-7, Stony Brook. Ask for offensive production, and you shall receive.

    14:10 Touchdown Stony Brook!!

    Fourth Quarter

So far, so good. Stony Brook won the third 7-0, but some more offensive production is needed.

    End of Third Quarter

:25 Maysonet picks up about six with a dancing, cutting run.

1:00 Coulter finds Gush across the middle for 22 yards and a first down…but Gush gets cranked on the end of the play. He held on. First down, Stony Brook.

1:26 Maysonet can only get two on second. Third and 8.

1:47 Brevi absolutely Moss’d a dude on the near sideline, but he was ruled out of bounds. Still a nice grab.

1:53 This time it’s a real kick, and it rolls to the Stony Brook 23 before being downed. First down, Stony Brook.

2:02 Parent again slings it over his intended receiver’s head and AIC will again be in punt formation.

2:08 Timeout Stony Brook. A stop here means the punt fake means nothing…unless they try it again.

2:08 Someone forgot to block on the blitz and the pressure forced another early screen pass. Incomplete. Third and 10 from the Stony Brook 45.

2:11 Parent’s pass was almost picked off by Reyes, who got both gloves on it but couldn’t haul it in.

Punt fake by AIC, Parent ran it for justttt enough for the first. Greg Logan and I called that play, for those of you watching at home. Quarterback as punter? Yep. No real field position disadvantage? Yep…Prime trick play time.

3:23 Parent threw it behind his receiver, and the guy had to come back for it–back in front of the marker. Fourth down for AIC.

3:32 Parent threw it over his intended receiver and out of bounds. Third down from the same spot.

4:03 Short pass wide to the left. Six yard gain. Second and four from midfield for AIC.

4:41 Taj Johnson, replacing the injured corners for Stony Brook, is dragged for about six additional yards after the catch as AIC picked up another first.

5:17 Mayo picks up a first down for AIC. First and 10 from the AIC 33.

5:58 Mayo picks up 7 or 8 for AIC. Second and threeish.

6:06 AIC will start from its own 20. The AIC returned is still down on the field. Initially he wasn’t moving, but now it looks like a leg cramp.

It was an 18-yard run by Jackolski for his second score of the day. The offensive line has really worn down the Yellow Jackets now, and there was a huge hole. Jackolski made the second wave miss, helped by some nice blocking from the backfield, and it’s 24-7, Stony Brook.

    6:12 Touchdown Stony Brook!!

6:42 Jackolski got about 6. Offensive line getting a real push now.

7:27 Jackolski with another big one. He broke a few tackles at the line and ended up with 21. First and 10, Seawolves, from the AIC 23.

8:07 Coulter finds Gush waiting in the middle of the field, and Gush picks up about 13. Second and 7 from the AIC 44.

8:30 Maysonet went for a couple but it’s holding on Stony Brook. First and 20 from the Seawolves’ 44.

9:01 Maysonet gets another 15 and a first down. Stony Brook on the AIC 47.

9:31 Maysonet gets 8 down the middle. A slippery guy, that one.

9:42 Terrible punt from Parent. Stony Brook to start from its own 30.

9:49 Long pass was broken up by Reyes, and though the AIC receiver was again screaming for a penalty, no call. AIC to punt.

9:55 GREAT pressure by Stony Brook as Richardson broke through the line…pass fell incomplete. Third and 10.

9:58 Parent went for it all but overthrew his receiver, who was in double coverage.

10:22 AIC runs a reverse and picks up 11. Stony Brook completely off-guard. First and 10 from midfield.

Interception, AIC. Coulter tried to force it inside when he had a receiver open downfield and paid a price. He made the tackle back at the AIC 39…first down AIC.

11:02 Maysonet is stopped for a loss of four on first and goal, and there’s a flag…it’s holding. It will be first and goal from the 15.

11:32 Jackolski with a big run! He came through the middle and got all the way down to the AIC 5 before being taken down, a 69 yard run!! First and goal.

Timeout Stony Brook as the play clock wound down. I just realized AIC’s punter is also its quarterback. Dangerous for fakes.

12:14 Jackolski grabs a couple more yards up the middle. Both he and Maysonet are very energetic backs, definitely good pickups from Hofstra. It was enough for the first at the Stony Brook 26.

    12:47 Jackolski gets a few.

12:58 AIC punt rolls all the way down to the SBU5, but someone touched it so the Seawolves start from their 16.

13:09 Parent and his receiver aren’t on the same page; Parent read out, the receiver read in. The referee read incomplete.

13:40 Pass good for about 7. Third and 3 from midfield for AIC.

Student section making some noise now.

    13:53 Incomplete on first down.

14:07 Mayo went up the middle again, and probably got enough for the first…they’re measuring. Yep, he got it. First and 10 from its own 43.

14:40 A good run by Mayo on first for 9 yards.

14:51 American runs a little trick play on the kickoff…the returner got together with three guys, who huddled and wound up handing the ball off on a reverse. Got AIC to its own 33 yard line.

15:00 Stony Brook will kick off.

    Third Quarter

Halftime: Stony Brook should look to put up at least 24 more points in the second half and not allow any. It’s doable, but the Seawolves will really have to play it out. It would be a strong signal of intent from the team, that it means business this year.

Halftime: Some American stats: Mayo and Williams combined for 22 net rushing yards. That’s stiff defense, and certainly where Stony Brook is winning the game. Parent is 10-for-13 for 116 yards and a touchdown…too much. He’s a senior, though, throwing high-percentage passes and really picking on the Seawolves secondary. Definitely need to close things up in the second half.

Halftime: Coulter was 7-for-9 for 97 yards and a touchdown. Solid. The two sacks are a concern, though they happened early. Since then, Stony Brook seems to have calmed down a little and played very good football.

Halftime: Maysonet and Jackolski played very well in relief of the injured Gowins. Maysonet, certainly the flashier of the two, ran for 55. Jackolski, all power, gained 44 and a touchdown.

Halftime: Not a great first half from Stony Brook, but a good one. It took the Seawolves a little bit to get firing, but once they did they managed the Yellow Jackets (expect for that 61-yard hiccup).

Halftime. Stony Brook 17, American 7

:23 The Yellow Jackets run it up the middle…it looks like they’re running it out.

:34 A good return by AIC, they’ll start from their own 35. Not long left in the half, though.

Jackolski ran in right up the middle for 11 yards. Great play, easy touchdown. 17-7, Stony Brook.

    :43 Touchdown Stony Brook!!

:49 Brevi gets one on the end-around. Third and 1.

Another injured Yellow Jacket. Max Brown hobbles off…also looks okay.

1:05 Jackolski takes it down to the AIC  12. Second and 2.

1:46 Coulter checks down to Maysonet out of the backfield, and Maysonet makes a guy miss. The game is being held up while that guy looks for his jockstrap. Not really though. It was a good move though.

2:23 Stony Brook picks up a first on a cute little wide receiver pick play. Lapore makes the catch. First and 10 at the AIC 31.

3:09 Maysonet tripped on his own guy, but picked up five or six. Third and 7.

3:48 Coulter tried a draw, but Maysonet ended up losing 2.

An injured Yellow Jacket on the play…he’s limping off, seems to be okay. It’s Jashawn Williams.

4:14 Maysonet fights off several would-be tacklers to gain eight and a Stony Brook first down from the AIC 44.

4:42 Good coverage in the AIC secondary forces Coulter to run with it. He gets 8. Second and 2.

4:50 Stony Brook starts from its own 40 after a good return by Brevi.

4:56 Touchdown, AIC. The fans thought the receiver was out of bounds on the catch, but unfortunately they don’t make the call. Stony Brook’s Cedrick Moore, the player who saved a touchdown on the big play, was beaten in the end zone by maybe an inch. He read it right, but couldn’t get a hand on the ball. 10-7, Stony Brook.

5:01 Pass falls incomplete…the receiver was blanketed in the end zone, and got up screaming for a flag. None thrown.

Long pass by Parent to Greer, and AIC is at first and goal at the SBU 9. 61 yards. He was run down by Moore of the Seawolves.

6:06 AIC starts from its own 28. A little scuffle on the kick return, but I think two players were just stuck together somehow. At any rate, they didn’t like it.

The chants of “Go for it!” on fourth and goal certainly said so.

It’s just no everything Stony Brook fans wanted in the opener…a shutout, surely, but I think many were hoping for a touchdown on that drive.

6:13 Coach elects to kick the field goal, and Skiffington hits it. 10-0, Stony Brook.

6:17 Coulter’s pass for Michael Lapore comes up short, and Coach Priore calls timeout to talk about the fourth down conversion attempt. Stony Brook is a solid three yards out.

6:55 This time, he’s stopped, losing one. Third and goal from the three.

7:10 Jackolski takes six up the gut. Second and goal from the one.

7:59 He got it! First and goal, Stony Brook, from the 7.

8:18 Maysonet can’t get it but the Seawolves elect to go for it on fourth.

9:06 Coulter escapes and dumps it to Arce for 4 yards. Third and 2.

9:49 Maysonet grabs another couple up the middle.

10:12 Maysonet for 13 yards and a first down at the AIC 19. Nifty spin by Maysonet to escape.

10:18 AIC somehow gets called for an illegal substitution after the timeout. Someone wasn’t paying attention. Third and 1.

10:18 AIC uses its second timeout with Stony Brook gaining momentum. The Seawolves are really moving the ball now. Hopefully a couple more touchdowns before the end of the half. Ball on the AIC 37.

10:40 Maysonet for a couple on first, Coulter scrambles for a couple more on second. Third and 6.

11:40 Big pass from Coulter to Brevi. Brevi does all the work and takes it to the AIC 42 for another first down.

12:25 O-line opens up a big hole for Jackolski, who takes it and gets a first down for 12.

13:11 AIC gets six back on third, but it’s not enough. Yellow Jackets to punt.

13:24 Good rush by Stony Brook, forcing an early toss on the screen. The back couldn’t find it, and it fell incomplete. Third and 17.

13:49 Good stop by Stony Brook on second, but AIC is called for holding and the play comes back. Second and 17.

13:54 Timeout AIC. The Yellow Jackets have the ball at their own 47 and a half yard line on second down and 7.

14:51 Big hit by West, but he couldn’t knock the ball free and AIC gets another first at its own 44.

    Second Quarter

AIC will definitely be energized by its first quarter performance–many expected the game to be much more one-sided by now. The Yellow Jackets are holding their own, picking up first downs against a close to makeshift Stony Brook defense. The AIC defense isn’t playing poorly either, swarming the Stony Brook line. Excuse the pun.

End of First Quarter–Stony Brook 7, AIC 0

:29 AIC connects on two short passes, and it’s a first down at the AIC 34.

Greg Logan and I puzzling about first and 10…shouldn’t it be first and 25?  Help us.

1:43 AIC receiver stretches for the first and makes it, but a flag is on the field. It’s a dead-ball personal foul against AIC, so it’s first and 10 from its own 21.

3:12 AIC starts at its own 25.

A good drive for Stony Brook after a poor start. Maysonet showed good patience in finding the holes on runs; expect to see more of him. Touchdown pass was perfectly timed and thrown. Solid, but the Seawolves need to show a lot more if they want to compete in the Big South this year.

3:17 Touchdown Stony Brook! Coulter with a 35 yard pass down the sideline to a wide open Matt Brevi! 7-0 Stony Brook.

3:46 Maysonet gets enough for the first on third down! A good run again, he was tripped but held his feet long enough to stretch past the marker. First and ten from the 35.

3:51 Coulter misses the tight end. He was under pressure on a designed naked bootleg-type play.

4:28 Same thing on first, Maysonet had a hole but was tripped going through it. Second and four from the AIC 40.

4:54 Stony Brook first down, Maysonet down the middle four 5. Had daylight but was tripped up.

5:36 Maysonet rips off another 6 yards, a good run. Stony Brook at midfield now.

5:52 Stony Brook first down! Coulter to Gush, a nice pass.

Stony Brook bailed out after two false starts on the punt by a running into the kicker. Stony Brook first down at its own 25.

7:49 Coulter sacked again, although it was of his own doing. He held the ball too long and tripped on someone on his way out. A coverage sack. Seawolves to punt.

8:30 Maysonet gets a carry but is stopped for no gain after a cutback attempt failed.

9:04 Coulter to Brevi for 7 good yards.

9:16 Clean slate. Punt flies into the end zone and the Seawolves take over, as they did on the first drive, from the 20.

9:23 Incomplete pass on third down, and AIC will punt it appears from the Stony Brook 36.

10:00 Finally a stop at the line. Third and six.

10:37 My optimism about this team wanes with every chucnk ripped off by an AIC running back. Ran for four on first down.

11:21 First down AIC at the Stony Brook 40.

11:55 AIC runs a wide receiver screen, the play that tripped up SBU (if it was one play) at USF. Big third down coming up.

12:35 Mayo gets it back for AIC after trucking West in the secondary. Defense really needs a stop here.

Students in full voice with a defense chant, and AIC jumps. False start.

12:50 Crowd finally has something to cheer about, unfortunately it’s a punt return stop. AIC starts at its own 48 with a good chance to score first here.

13:30 Jackolski stopped on third forcing a Stony Brook punt. Disheartening to see. Also, a surprise see Brock Jackolski in the backfield and not Maysonet to start.

14:10 Coulter is sacked on second down. So much for that big offensive line…AIC came to play.

14:54 Stony Brook’s first drive begins from its own 20 with a run by Jackolski, one of the backs replacing the injured Eddie Gowins today.

Sparse crowd at LaValle Stadium–hardly comparable to USF, but significantly pro-Seawolves. Red Zone looks amazing down there. The section has definitely grown since last year. Seawolves to receive.

It’s game time!! Honoring 9/11 and our country before kickoff.

Pregame: Stony Brook will be looking to move the ball effectively and without turnovers against a vastly inferior Yellow Jackets team. That means no interceptions from quarterback Michael Coulter, who tossed four of them against USF. It also means really getting the running game going behind the Seawolves huge, strong offensive line. There should be a lot of point on the board by the time the fourth quarter is over today.

Pregame: This could be a good game for Stony Brook to rebound after the trouncing it took in Florida. The Seawolves are looking forward to a good year after being picked to finish in second in the Big South by the preseason polls. American International was picked to finish in fourth in the Division-II Northeast-10.

Pregame: Senior Rob Parent is the signalcaller for the Yellow Jackets, and sophomore RB Mike Mayo led AIC on the ground with 83 yards on 14 carries.

Pregame: American International also lost its season opener last weekend, falling 20-11 to C.W. Post. The Yellow Jackets blocked an extra point and returned it for the two points awarded in the college game for doing so. C.W. Post was ahead for most of the game, leading 20-5 until the final minute when AIC scored its last touchdown, failing on the two-point conversion.

Pregame: Coach Priore stressed that the injuries were not suffered because of the FBS opponent but because all on the field were playing the game of football. He said the injuries were just as likely to occur against any other team on the schedule.

Pregame: On the offensive side, Stony Brook will be without starting running back Eddie Gowins. Gowins, who is one touchdown away from second all-time at Stony Brook, has sat out practice all week with an unspecified abdominal strain. In his absence, the workload will be placed on transfers Miguel Maysonet and Brock Jackolski. Maysonet led Stony Brook in rushing last weekend with 72 yards, and will probably get the majority of the carries today (adjust your fantasy team accordingly).

Pregame: The cost, however, was greater than just the final scoreline. Stony Brook’s defense is short four players this week, with two out for the season. Starting cornerbacks Donald Porter (knee, out for season) and Al-Majid Hutchins (shoulder, 3-4 weeks) will be watching from the sidelines. Linebacker Reggie Francklin is also out for the season with a leg injury. Defensive lineman Michael Marino is week-to-week with a shoulder injury, but he has been ruled out of tonight’s contest.

Pregame: Last weekend, Stony Brook (and I) traveled to Tampa Bay for a game against the University of South Florida Bulls. It was Stony Brook’s first-ever game against an FBS-level team, and the final score showed it as the Seawolves lost, 59-14. Stony Brook jumped out to a 14-7 lead before failing to score a single point beyond the first quarter. Coach Priore said the team will build from the experience.

Pregame: Hello and welcome to sunny Stony Brook, New York, where tonight the Stony Brook Seawolves will try to pick up their first win of the season against the Division-II American International Yellow Jackets. Gametime temperature is expected to be around 74 degrees with few clouds–perfect for some Seawolves football.
