On a cold, windy Wednesday afternoon, the Stony Brook Men’s Tennis team took its talents inside to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to face off against No. 61 St. John’s. Inside the center, it was the Red Storm’s day, as the Seawolves lost their matchup 5-2.
Stony Brook was able to pull out and win two of the three doubles matches. Despite losing the first doubles flight 6-2, juniors Raphael Termat and Kenzo Kauffmann got Stony Brook a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Junior Tyler Hoffman and freshman Rodrigo Ristow Hadlich claimed a 6-3 victory in the No. 3 doubles match, to help the Seawolves secure a 1-0 lead entering singles play.
Termat won the first singles flight for the Seawolves, beating senior Daniel Skripnik, 7-5, 4-6, 10-3. Below the No. 1 match, however, Stony Brook was soundly defeated.
Every Seawolf, other than Termat, that partook in singles flights was swept in straight sets by the Red Storm.
Senior Lucas Hejhal won out for the Red Storm against senior Jose Morales 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match. St. John’s senior Roberto Livi defeated freshman Samuel Taieb 6-4, 6-2 in the third flight of singles matches.
In the fourth singles flight, senior Vaidik Munshaw took down Hoffman 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Dusan Vukicevic beat Hadlich 6-4, 6-4 in fifth singles. In the No. 6 singles flight, senior Michael-John Every beat Kauffmann 6-1, 6-2.
This loss snaps a three-match winning streak for Stony Brook, while the win for St. John’s is a historic one. With its 18th win of the season against Stony Brook, St. John’s broke the school record for most wins in a single season for men’s tennis.
The Seawolves will have about a week off before entering the final stretch of the regular season. Here, the team will have a three game homestand before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
The homestand consists of two non conference matchups and one final conference game. First on the list is Wagner College on Tuesday, April 12th at 2 p.m.. After a few days rest, the Seawolves have two matches back-to-back, first against Hartford on Friday, April 15th at 1 p.m., then against Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m..
