Seawolves football was voted to finish second in the Big South in a preseason poll of coaches and media at the conference’s annual media day on Thursday.
It was the second straight year football has been selected by the polls to finish in second. Last season, the Seawolves earned a share of the Big South title by beating Liberty in the final game of the year.
Stony Brook received one first place vote.
Also at media day, junior running back Eddie Gowins and senior center and captain Paul Fenarolli were selected to the preseason All-Big South team.
Gowins and Fenarolli were major components of a Seawolves rushing attack that ranked 30th in the country last season.
Gowins ran for a team-leading 890 yards and nine touchdowns and was an All-Big South selection for the second straight year in fall 2009. He led the Big South in rushing and was 22nd in the nation.
Gowins has rushed for 2,200 yards, ranking fourth in school history.
Stony Brook opens its 2010 season at South Florida on September 4, the school’s first game against an FBS opponent.
Football begins formal fall practice activities on Monday, August 9.
