Junior Elizabeth Caldwell finished in first place in the women’s 5K at the Rothenberg Run in Warwick, Rhode Island Friday. Both the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams both finished in second place in the meet.
Caldwell won the race in a time of 17:37.4, finishing the run a full two and a half seconds ahead of the second-place runner, Brown University’s Clare Peabody. The women’s team came in second place with 46 points, behind Brown’s 43 points. Four Seawolves—Caldwell, juniors Olivia Ritchie and Christine Eisenberg and senior Tara Peck—finished in the top 15 in the women’s race. Ritchie finished in 17:47.0, Eisenberg in 17:59.0 and Peck finished in 18:05.4.
Senior Mitchell Kun and junior Joseph Clark finished in fourth and fifth place in the men’s 8K race, respectively. Kun crossed the finish line in 25:09.3 and Clark finished just behind Kun at 25:12.6. The Stony Brook men’s team finished in second with 78 points, far behind first-place Connecticut. Sophomore Seawolf Daniel Connelly finished in 19th with a time of 25:39.
Stony Brook junior Christina Melian competed this Saturday in the 2015 Division I Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky. She ran the 6K in a time of 20:13.6, earning 10th place in the meet.
Finishing in 10th place is almost unchartered territory for Melian, who is used to finishing in the top five at the very least. But finishing in the top 10 was impressive given the company she was in. Her 20:13.6 time was 13.1 seconds behind the winning time of junior Erin Clark of Colorado, who finished the race in just over 20 minutes.
At the halfway point of the race, Melian was in sixth place, only 0.9 seconds behind the leader, Michigan’s Erin Finn.
Stony Brook will travel to New Britain, Connecticut this Friday to compete in the Central Connecticut Mini-Meet.
