When asked about the similarities between this year’s version of the Stony Brook baseball team and the team that went to the College World Series in 2012, manager Matt Senk said that resiliency was visible in both.

While the Seawolves were resilient in their game against the No. 7 overall seed Texas Christian University Horned Frogs, the TCU bats were too much for Stony Brook’s pitching staff. Senk’s squad was eliminated 8-3 by the host team in the Fort Worth Regional on Sunday afternoon.

Stony Brook fell behind 2-0 after two innings, but was able to keep it as close as 2-1 after four innings had been played.

Stony Brook’s first run of the game came on a miscommunication between TCU’s senior centerfielder Cody Jones and junior leftfielder Dane Steinhagen, as a blooper by sophomore center fielder Toby Handley that should have been caught dropped in the outfield.

This allowed freshman third baseman Bobby Honeyman to score to cut the lead down to 2-1, but the Seawolves were not able to tie.

The fifth inning provided a big blow that Stony Brook was never able to fully come back from, as TCU freshman catcher Evan Skoug, who started the day 0-for-2, drove in three runs with one swing.

Against Stony Brook junior reliever Chad Lee, Skoug worked the count full before driving a 3-2 fastball over the left field fence to give TCU some breathing room at 5-1.

Besides that one swing, Lee was able to pitch well in relief of Stony Brook starter, freshman Teddy Rodliff. Before that, Lee had pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only two hits and striking out three batters.

The resilient Seawolves were able to come back a little bit, cutting the lead to 5-3 in their half of the fifth, which was the bottom since Stony Brook was the home team on the day.

With the bases loaded and one out, Handley lined a single into center to score Honeyman.

One batter later, the speed of junior left fielder Jack Parenty came in handy as he barely beat out a routine double play to allow freshman designated hitter Malcolm Nachmanoff to score and cut the lead in half.

But with runners at the corners, senior second baseman Robert Chavarria struck out swinging to end the comeback attempt.

TCU then pulled away for good in the latter innings, tacking on a run in the seventh and a pair in the eighth to get to the final total of eight runs.

Skoug led off the seventh with a rope off the center field wall that was about five feet from being his second long ball of the day. He would then eventually score on junior right fielder Nolan Brown’s single up the middle.

The pair of runs in the eighth came off a swinging bunt in front of the plate that allowed senior third baseman Derek Odell to score. Jones then scored on an RBI single to right field.

It was Rodliff’s first start of his career, and he did not fare well in a switch from his typical closer role. The freshman only lasted 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while recording only one strikeout.

In their final games in a Seawolves uniform, seniors Cole Peragine and Chavarria finished a combined 0-for-7.

It was a particularly disappointing regional for catcher Peragine, as he went 1-for-13 in the three games, an atypical number for someone who was arguably one of the more consistent players on this Seawolves roster.

Stony Brook finished the year 35-16-1.
