With the America East Baseball Championship one week away, it seemed fitting that a 2014 Championship rematch would be the final series of the 2015 season, with the Stony Brook Seawolves headed to Binghamton for a three-game series against the Bearcats in Vestal, New York.

Unlike last season’s final round in which Binghamton swept Stony Brook in two games, the Seawolves did not lose any of the games at the Bearcats Sports Complex, winning 13-4 and 5-0 on Friday before tying the series finale on Saturday, 4-4.

Junior left fielder Jack Parenty had a great weekend, batting at an 8-for-11 clip and driving in six runs.

It was a weekend in which defense was not necessarily on the forefront for the Seawolves, as they allowed at least four runs in two of the three matchups. However, sophomore pitcher Daniel Zamora continued his hot streak of pitching.

He put together a great outing in the middle game of the set, throwing 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out three Bearcats batters.

In the other two outings, it was Parenty leading the bats to victories. He went a perfect 4-for-4 in the first game and then 2-for-3 in game three.

The Seawolves totaled 16 hits in game one, with sophomore infielders Jeremy Giles and Casey Baker, along with senior second baseman Robert Chavarria, adding multi-hit days to go along with Parenty’s.

The Seawolves started the game with a three-run first on the back of a Chavarria RBI single to right and a two-run single by Giles.

After Binghamton and Stony Brook traded runs in the next two half-innings, the Seawolves exploded for six in the fourth. The scoring was started with a Parenty two-run home run, his second of the season. Giles added another RBI with a single, freshman designated hitter Malcolm Nachmanoff drove in two runs with a base knock and senior catcher Cole Peragine also had a one-base hit. All three went right up the middle.

After going up 10-1 in the fourth, the Seawolves kept their distance, pacing Binghamton’s three runs with three of their own.

The second game’s offense did not get going as soon and it was not nearly as forceful. On the back of Zamora and then freshman closer Cameron Stone, the Seawolves held a 1-0 lead until the seventh and final inning when the guys in red put up a four-spot on Bearcats pitcher Anthony Grillini.

Parenty provided an RBI single, as did Chavarria. The final two runs were scored when a grounder by Giles to third was thrown errantly, allowing Parenty and Baker to score and give Stone enough breathing room to finish off the 1.2 inning save.

The regular-season finale ended in a unique way. When the Saturday rain came in the top of the ninth to Vestal, the umpires called the game after about 17 minutes of wet weather with the score knotted at four apiece.

After the Seawolves started hot on Friday, it was Binghamton’s turn on Saturday to put up three in the Bearcats’ first at-bat. Sophomore Brendan Skidmore got the scoring going with a two-run double down the right field line, and freshman Pat Britt lined out to center for a sacrifice fly to give the Bearcats a 3-0 first-inning lead.

Baker got the Seawolves going again, driving a triple down the right field line to lead off the second inning and the designated hitter on Saturday, freshman Andruw Gazzola, grounded out to second to bring Baker home.

The teams then traded runs in the third inning, and that would end Binghamton’s scoring on the day. Stony Brook would add runs in the sixth and seventh to tie the game at its eventual 4-4 result.

Gazzola drove in his second run of the game in the sixth with a fielder’s choice that plated Parenty.

Then, the tying run in the seventh came off the bat of Peragine, who singled to left and plated Giles to tie the game at four. The Seawolves had the bases loaded in the seventh, but Chavarria lined out to short to strand all three runners.

Those were three of the nine total runners that Stony Brook left on base in the matchup.

The Seawolves will head to the America East Baseball Championship next weekend in Lowell, Massachusetts, where they will arrive as the top seed and play the fourth-seeded Hartford Hawks on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Binghamton will not have a chance to defend its two-time title, as the Bearcats went from winning the crown in 2013 and 2014 to finishing in the basement of the conference in 2015.
