The best attack in baseball is a balanced attack, and that is what Matt Senk and his Stony Brook baseball team had Wednesday afternoon, taking down the Fordham Rams 6-5 to take a three-game series with the Bronx, N.Y. school.
Mother Nature did not affect the bats, as seven different Seawolves recorded a hit in the matchup and three different players recorded an RBI. In that mix was Jack Parenty, as he launched a two-run home run to right in the top of the second.
It was errors that doomed the Rams in the first, as Stony Brook plated a pair of unearned runs as well as another to take a 3-0 lead before Fordham even had a plate appearance.
Parenty led off the game with a walk, and worked his way home, eventually scoring on a throwing error by Fordham starter Donald May to get Stony Brook on the board.
Toby Handley also worked a walk to get on base, and he eventually found his way home when Cole Peragine chopped an RBI groundout to second base to double the Seawolves lead in the first.
Stony Brook increased their lead to 3-0 when Andruw Gazzola touched home after Johnny Caputo reached on a fielding error by first baseman Matthew Kozuch.
The Rams cut the lead back to one in the bottom half of the first on a Charles Galiano long ball. The junior catcher drilled a Nicholas DiEva pitch to left-center, bringing home Kozuch in the process.
Parenty got the two runs back with his bomb to left-center, the first of the season for the junior outfielder. He also drove in Jeremy Giles.
Fordham was able to tie the game in the bottom of the third and fourth, scoring a pair in the third before knotting it up in the fourth.
Joseph DeVito tied the game at five in the fourth, roping a single to left to bring in Ryan McNally and bring the Rams back even.
The Seawolves took the lead back for good in the top of the seventh, courtesy of Gazzola. He laced a single to right, bringing in Handley to make it 6-5 for good.
Kevin Kernan got his first win of the season, throwing three solid innings, only allowing one run while striking out a pair of Ram batters.
It was Teddy Rodliff picking up his second save of the campaign, throwing the final three innings and only allowing three baserunners. None of them were able to go past second base.
America East play begins this weekend for the Seawolves, as they host the defending champion Binghamton Bearcats for a three-game set. Two games will be played on Saturday, and then one matchup on Sunday.
