Last Monday, the America East conference announced its 2014-2015 honors for men’s basketball. Three Seawolves were awarded for their play this season.
Forward Jameel Warney headlined the announcement. The junior from Plainfield, N.J. was named America East Player of the Year, averaging 16.2 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Warney, who averaged a double-double per game, recorded his conference-leading 22nd of the season during Sunday’s semifinal playoff victory versus No. 2 Vermont.
Warney was the conference leader in points, rebounds and also blocks, being named the America East Defensive Player of the Year. A force defensively all season, Warney was placed on the conference All-Defensive Team.
Warney was joined by his teammate Carson Puriefoy, who also recieved First-Team honors. The junior guard from Wenonah, N.J. averaged 13.9 points and 3.4 assists per game, the second highest mark in the America East.
Puriefoy’s success on the court was indicative of the outcome of the Seawolves’ games. Stony Brook was 18-5 this season when Puriefoy recorded double digit points, surpassing the 20-point mark six times. On Jan. 25, Puriefoy dropped a career-high 27 points to propel the Seawolves to victory over Binghamton.
Rayshaun McGrew was the last Seawolf to be honored on Monday, being named to the America East Third-Team. McGrew, a junior forward from Chicago, started in all 32 regular season games averaging 8.7 points and 8.3 rebounds. He took advantage of the opportunity to be a starter after coming off the bench in 29 games during the 2013-2014 season.
Warney, Puriefoy and McGrew will look to continue their hot play through the end of the America East conference tournament and beyond. The Seawolves are prepared to play No. 1 seeded Albany this Saturday, with a chance to dance on the line.
