The Stony Brook men’s and women’s track teams headed to The Armory in New York City back on Feb. 20 and 21 for the America East Indoor Track Championships.

Unfortunately, neither team was able to finish in the top half of competing teams. The men finished seventh overall and the women finished fifth.

Although the teams both failed to crack the final winner’s circle, freshman Kaylyn Gordon did make some history of her own. She set a school record with a 5.92 meter long jump and was crowned America East champion in that category.

This performance earned her the championship’s Most Outstanding Performer and Rookie of the Week honors. Gordon became the first Seawolf in the program’s history to win Most Outstanding Performer.

Another high point of the championships for the Seawolves occurred during the 3,000 meter and 1,000 meter runs on the women’s side. Junior Christina Melian finished 18 seconds faster than anyone else in the 3,000 meter run, while freshman Jane Clark was the runner of honor for the 1,000 meter run.

This marked the second consecutive season Stony Brook won the women’s 1,000 meter event, as Olivia Burne won it for the Seawolves in 2014.

The highest placing Seawolf on the men’s side was Lamar Hayes, who finished third in the 200 meter dash finals.

Albany won both the men’s and women’s championships for the day. The men’s team accumulated 191 points, 57 more than second-place Binghamton. Albany’s women recorded 197.66 points, with Binghamton once again finishing a distant second.

Regarding point totals, Stony Brook’s women fared better than the men did. The women’s team recorded 83 points in comparison to the men’s 46.
