Last Friday, Stony Book Softball traveled south for the North Florida Tournament. Entering the five-game weekend tournament, the Seawolves were 2-3 on the season after last weekend’s tournament at Florida Gulf Coast and finished this one 2-3.
Looking to even their record at 3-3, the Seawolves played No. 25 Kansas in the first game of the tournament. Despite an early 2-0 lead, thanks in part to a solo home run from senior Bria Green, the Jayhawks came right back and tied the game, scoring runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. The back-and-forth contest continued until Jessie Roane hit a game-winning RBI single in the 10th to give Kansas a 3-2 victory.
The second game of Friday’s doubleheader came against Siena. Looking to rebound from the first loss, Head Coach Megan Bryant sent freshman Maddy Neales to the mound. Neales’ 6 strikeouts led the Seawolves to a 2-0 victory. Once again, Stony Brook was led on offense by Bria Green who went 2-2 with an RBI.
On Saturday, the Seawolves once again faced Siena. This time, Stony Brook was unable to hold the Saints’ bats down. Siena was able to hold a 6-5 lead into the last inning. The Seawolves, however, were able to mount a two-out six-run rally to defeat the Saints for a second time, 11-6.
The second game on Saturday against South Dakota was cancelled due to weather conditions.
On Sunday, Stony Brook played a twin-bill with North Florida, losing both matchups. The Ospreys jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, and the Seawolves could not recover, losing the matchup 10-6. The Seawolves cut the matchup to 8-5 in the fifth, after Allie Pisciotta drove in Lexie Shue with a single, but North Florida scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
Game two was much tighter, as the Seawolves fell 5-4 in eight innings. Green belted another home run in this one, this time a two-run shot, and after four innings the game was knotted at two. Stony Brook was down 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth, but could not rally enough. Kim Ragazzo led off the inning with a pinch-hit double and then scored later on Green’s single. Melissa Phelan lined into a double play to end the game.
Stony Brook heads to Harrisonburg, Virginia next weekend to take part in the James Madison Invitational, which features matchups with the Dukes of JMU, Maryland, and Rhode Island.
