The Stony Brook hockey team began their 2014-15 season on a high note, defeating Syracuse University twice over the weekend at The Rinx in Hauppauge. The Seawolves came away with a 4-0 win on Saturday and followed it up with a 5-2 victory on Sunday.

In Saturday’s season opener, forward Tyler Underhill would open the scoring for Stony Brook. He scored with just six seconds remaining in the first period to give SBU a 1-0 lead.

In the second period the Seawolves continued to build on their lead. Goals from forwards Mike Amodeo and Vincent Lopes gave Stony Brook a 3-0 advantage going into the third period.

Forward Sam Brewster would add a fourth goal for the Seawolves in the final period. The four goals were more than enough for goaltender Brendan Jones, who made 25 saves and picked up his first shutout of the season.

Sunday’s game would prove to be more challenging for Stony Brook as they trailed the Orangemen 1-0 heading into the second period. But, just five and a half minutes into the second period, SBU forward Joe Bochichio scored his first goal of the season to tie things up at one.

With just over two minutes remaining in the second period, Brewster came through with his second goal of the weekend to give his team a 2-1 lead. But, Syracuse would offer a quick response, tying the game up just six seconds later. But, before the end of the period Seawolves forward JT Hall found the back of the net, and once again put SBU on top.

Stony Brook took command of the game in the third period. Forward Ryan Cotcamp, who led the team in goals last season, found the back of the net for his first goal of the season to give SBU a 4-2 lead. In the final minutes, Bochichio secured the win for his team with an empty net goal.

Derek Willms picked up the win in net for the Seawolves in the second game. He stopped 34 of the 36 shots he faced.

The Seawolves will be home once again this weekend, when they play a pair of games against the University of Rhode Island. The games will take place Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
