The Stony Brook women’s sports teams had a successful weekend, as women’s volleyball swept its home invitational and women’s soccer beat Fordham on Sunday afternoon in an exciting overtime game. Along with these victories, a number of players received weekly awards honoring their impressive play.

Freshman forward Maddie Good of the Stony Brook women’s soccer team was awarded the America East Rookie of the Week. She was a crucial player in the Seawolves overtime win against Fordham on Sunday, tallying a goal and an assist.

The assist helped Stony Brook tie up the game after being down 1-0 in the second half. She followed that up by scoring the go-ahead goal giving the Seawolves a 2-1 lead. They eventually won the game in overtime 3-2 courtesy of a Tessa Devereaux goal. The strong week from Good, 1G 1A, ties her with Devereaux as leading scorers on the team, each with six points.

Two other awards were handed to Stony Brook athletes this week. A strong effort from the women’s volleyball team led to two players being presented with weekly honors. Senior Taylor Gillie and junior Nicole Vogel were awarded America East Player of the Week and Setter of the Week, respectively. The two led Stony Brook to victories against Kennesaw State, Western Michigan and St. Francis-Brooklyn.

Gillie also won Most Valuable Player of the tournament after leading the conference, averaging 1.55 stuffs per stanza, 2.55 kills per set and .323 hitting. Her weekend is one of the best the Seawolves have seen in some time. Vogel played an important role as well with her 10.55 assists per set and 2.91 digs per frame.

Both teams will look to use these awards as a source of confidence heading into conference play this weekend. Volleyball will meet the Hartford Hawks on Friday in Hartford at 6 p.m. to start conference play, while the soccer team will travel to UMass-Lowell to face the River Hawks in their conference opening game.
