On Tuesday night, the Stony Brook women’s volleyball team took on the Fordham Rams in the home opener. The Seawolves topped Fordham, winning the game with a final score of 3-0. Stony Brook took the first set with a score of 25-20, won the second with a score of 25-17, and came from behind to win the final set 25-23.
“We got a little bit better as we went on, and we ended better than we started,” Head Coach Coley Pawlikowski said about her team’s victory. “I think we can still come out a little bit more aggressive and a little bit more confident, but we ended better than we started.”
Redshirt junior Kathy Fletcher led the team with 14 kills. Junior Stephanie McFadden came in second on the Seawolves, tallying up eight kills for the game. Nicole Vogel, a junior, had an impressive 31 assists during the course of the game. Redshirt junior Laura Hathaway racked up 16 digs for the game, the most for the whole game.
“I think that we did well,” Laura Hathaway said. “I think that we got better at a lot of things we’ve been focusing on. I think we have a couple of things to work on still, but I think fighting through that last match when we were down was a big step for us, and sweeping in three was another big step.”
Stony Brook improved to 19-5 against the Rams all-time. They have also been victorious in both of their home openers under Pawlikowski. The volleyball team will next be travelling to Arkansas to compete in the Razorback Invitational, taking on SMU on Friday and Arkansas and South Dakota on Saturday.
