Women’s volleyball traveled to St. John’s University for a women’s volleyball match Tuesday night. The Seawolves came into the matchup 3-4 on the season looking to even up their record.

St. John’s made quick work of the Seawolves in game 1 winning 25-5. The Red Storm (5-3) hit .389 giving them momentum going into game 2.

The Seawolves responded early in the second game taking a 7-6 lead. Soon after, St. John’s went on a 7-0 run, giving them a lead they would not surrender. Game 2 finished with the Red Storm winning 25-16.

With their backs against the wall, Stony Brook played their most competitive game of the match in game 3.  Despite going down 4-1 early, SBU would regain the lead at 6-0, thanks in part to back-to-back kills by star sophomore Melissa Rigo.

Both teams went back and forth for the remainder of the game until the Red Storm went on a late run to complete the sweep.

It was the twelfth loss in just 13 matches against Big East school St. John’s for Stony Brook. The two will meet again later this month for the Bryant Invitational.

The aforementioned Melissa Rigo finished with 7 kills and 7 digs. Rigo and the Seawolves will continue tournament season at the Kennesaw State Owl Classic Friday to play Samford, Kennesaw State, Tennessee Tech and Coastal Carolina.
