Volleyball underway

After more than a month with no matches, the Stony Brook Seawolves’ women’s volleyball team opened their season on the right foot last Friday at Holy Cross.

The Stony Brook volleyball team swept Holy Cross (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) before falling to Manhattan in three close sets (30-32, 21-25, 20-25) on the second day of the Crusader Classic hosted by Holy Cross (HC).

Junior setter Hannah Dolan and sophomore captain Lo Hathaway were both named to the all-tournament team after the matches. Dolan played an important role over the weekend as she totaled 93 assists, including match-highs of 32 and 37 against Holy Cross and Manhattan, respectively, on Saturday. She also recorded 10 aces over the three-match stretch to lead the Seawolves.

Hathaway tied a match-best for digs with 10 in the win over Holy Cross and posted 17 against Manhattan after a 12-dig performance on Friday.

New head coach Coley Pawlikowski’s reaction concerning the weekend was positive and motivating.

“Overall, it was a decent opening weekend. We had a lot of positive learning and growing moments that we will take into this season. We played consistent and well as a team against Holy Cross. In our second match against Manhattan, we fell short. Hopefully, this match will resonate with us and help us learn to dig deep and push through fatigue and pressure from an opponent,” Pawlikowski said in a press release.

With the win over HC, the Stony Brook volleyball team begins the season at 2-0.

Stony Brook will travel to Syracuse next weekend for the Syracuse Candlewood Suites Invitational against Colorado on Friday, Sept. 6 at 8:30 a.m. They will take on the hosts at 2:30 p.m. and go head-to-head with Rutgers and Oakland the following afternoon.
