The Stony Brook men’s basketball team lost to the University of Vermont Catamounts on Friday, losing its first conference game of the season 81-73. It is Stony Brook’s first loss in six games.
With the loss, the Seawolves are now tied for second-place in the America East conference with a record of 4-1 with Vermont in the lead with a 5-1 conference record. Despite losing, Stony Brook is still off to its best start to a season in its Division-I history with 13 wins and five losses thus far.
Freshman forward Jameel Warney had his second double-double in as many games by scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Four other Seawolves also scored in double-digits, with redshirt freshman Scott King making a career high with 14 points.
Vermont had control of the game from fairly early on. The Catamounts were unable to really pull away from the Seawolves, who managed to only trail by 32-27 at halftime. In the second half, Vermont went on a 12-0 run that put them ahead by 18 points, seemingly eliminating any real chance of Stony Brook coming back.
The Seawolves were able to manufacture a 10-0 run of their own, however, and got the deficit down to single digits. They trailed by only four points in the final minutes of the game, but Vermont was able to hold on.
Stony Brook’s next game will be on the road again against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
