The Stony Brook men’s basketball team came up short against the University of Maryland Terrapins on Friday night, losing 76-69 in its last game before Christmas. The Seawolves are now 8-3 on the season.
They didn’t make it easy on Maryland, however. Despite being down 20 points in the second half, the Seawolves managed to fight back to get within two points of their opponents. However, in the final minutes of the game, the Terrapins were able to snatch victory in a game that was closer than they would have liked.
Senior forward Tommy Brenton was slightly short of a triple-double with nine points, eight rebounds, and a career-high nine assists. Freshman forward Jameel Warney got 17 points and blocked three shots.
Maryland came out of the gate with an explosive offense; the Terrapins made 11 of their first 13 shots and accumulated 27 points in the first nine minutes of the game. They hit four three-pointers on a night in which they would make nine of such. It was the first time all season that Stony Brook trailed a game at halftime.
Later in the game, when the Seawolves trailed by 20, they embarked on an 11-0 run to cause a great stir within the crowd. The closest they would get was a deficit of 71-79 with 34 seconds to play.
Despite the loss, Stony Brook’s start to the season is the best in the program’s Division-I history. The Seawolves will next play Seton Hall University next Friday at 7 p.m. at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
