Stony Brook baseball takes game two of NCAA Super Regional against LSU

Senior starter Tyler Johnson (12-1) threw a complete game and earned his third win of the postseason as the Seawolves won the second game of the Super Regional, 3-1.

The team will now play a forced game three on Sunday against LSU, with the winner going to the College World Series in Omaha.

LSU took the first game of the series, 5-4. The 12-inning game started on Friday but was delayed until Saturday morning due to inclement weather.

However, the Seawolves refused to die and took game two, forcing a deciding game three.

The win brought an end to LSU’s 11-game home postseason winning streak, which started in 2008.

Johnson was the star of the show, giving up just three hits and one unearned run. He is 4-0 all-time in NCAA tournament play and 3-0 this postseason.

His LSU counterpart, Kevin Gausman, was drafted No. 4 overall in the MLB draft earlier this week. Gausman took the loss for game two, after pitching one inning and picking up the win in the delayed game one.

Both teams were hitless until the third, when Gausman gave up two RBI singles to senior Sal Intagliata and junior Will Carmona, respectively.

The game stayed 2-0 and Johnson maintained a no-hitter until the top of the fifth, when LSU’s Jordy Snikeris led off with a single to right.

Snickeris was then thrown out on what umpires deemed a pickoff call. As teammate Tyler Moore drew a walk, Snickeris ran, causing SBU catcher Pat Cantwell to throw down to second base. Snickeris was called out after he overslid second.

The next two LSU hitters grounded out, preserving Johnson’s shutout.

In the end of the inning, sophomore Kevin Courtney pushed Stony Brook’s lead to 3-0 with a solo home run.

Courtney, who has five hits in eight at-bats in this Super Regional series, led the Seawolves with three hits and an RBI, in addition to scoring two of the teams three runs.

LSU finally scored with an unearned run in the sixth, but Johnson forced Snikeris to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

An almost-flawless Johnson retired the next eight batters until, with one out left in the ninth, Snikeris reached base on a throwing error.

But Moore popped up to third to end the inning and the game, sealing the win for Johnson and giving the Seawolves another shot at Omaha.

The deciding game three will be played at 1:00 p.m., EST and aired on ESPN2.
